What is different
about our batch was that we left Stanley in 1995 unchanged exactly as
we entered in 1989. The kaleidoscope of students from all over India
under the All India Quota first initiated in TamilNadu in 1989 marked
a new beginning in the history of Stanley. During our years in Stanley,
we not only laughed together at each other’s silly jokes, but
also cried together as we comforted each other’s pain and suffering.
In spite of the fact that we were never reluctant to voice our ferocious
disagreements and opinions in private as well as public forums, we were
able to unite as much as possible as a class and rally for common causes
serving the greater good of Stanley on several occasions. Examples of
such occasions although sporadic in memory were evidenced in the first
medicos strike in 1990, restoration of Euphoria in 1993 and Graduation
Day in 1995. Reflecting back now we believe several of these disagreements
were only a positive testimonial to the co-existence of several strong,
resolute and independent thinkers in our batch.
As any other
medical college class we had our share of outstanding academic gunners
who clocked countless hours in the library and aced every exam. It seemed
liked success came to them so naturally that it was no surprise when
one of them got a post-graduate admission at the All India level by
securing the 4th rank immediately after our internship. Successful academic
accomplishment for our batch as a whole was palpable in the years following
graduation by the large numbers who successfully pursued post- graduate
education in India and abroad. The fact that several of our classmates
today hold academic appointments in reputed medical schools and colleges
today underscores the deep commitment of our batch to medical education
and research.
Although our
immediate seniors (the distinguished ’88 batch) will always be
credited with sowing the buds in kicking-off the Stanley Literary Society,
which in turn led to the revival of limited cultural activity within
Stanley, history will always remember us as the batch which brought
back the massive intercollegiate cultural festival EUPHORIA after a
span of 3 years, a proud tradition that still continues. The struggle
the office bearers at that time had to undergo to bring back this tradition
will require a separate documentary! History will always credit several
of the extremely talented individuals from our batch for reviving a
long dead light music troop and bringing home many laurels. As with
our light music legends, the star athletes of our batch, some of whose
names received iconic recognition in both the college and hostel will
always be remembered as the architects behind the glory and success
of the Stanley Cricket and Football Team in several intercollegiate
championships held in the early 90’s.
Last but not
the least, our batch was one in which we were way ahead of our time
in being a true melting pot with respect to people of different caste,
creed and socio-economic status. Deriving strength and determination
from this civic equality we cherished from 1989-95 we decided to initiate
a fight against the social injustice, which discriminates in terms of
access to health care. The results of this awakening recently led to
a small group of our classmates starting a charity called Reaching the
Unreached (RTU) to do something in return to the society. Our mission
for RTU is currently focused on helping the poor during illness and
preventing the poor from getting sick. For more information of RTU please
